Student Life

Overview

There are many challenges getting students to experience activities and culture on traditional campuses, so much so that it is either forced or somehow rewarded by academic or other means.

Many institutions are even considered "suitcase" colleges because students often schedule their courses to be Monday through Thursday, allowing them the opportunity to return home, or visit friends at other colleges that may be more "fun".  This severely impacts your child from developing closer connections with peers and likely involves missing events planned around the weekends - yet another cost you pay for and your child doesn't participate in or gain the benefit of.

The MAC eliminates these challenges by way of our travels, and incessant activities meant to fulfill academics, or to be just plain enjoyable, and broaden your child's life experiences.

Residential Life

The MAC has no formal campus as we are constantly moving.

We will utilize campgrounds, hostels, a cruise ship, occasional hotels, fields, side of the road, on the beach, and at the top of mountains.

I think the patrol formation will be one of the most rewarding experiences of residential life because the shared experiences of setting up camp together, and especially cooking and eating together.  To "break bread" with others is a far more meaningful experience of fellowship and connection to the entire cohort.

Where do you want to spend your weekends?

You want to have more than one location for study abroad, don't you?

Student Activities

Many activities are credited as an important aspect of learning, and others just for the fun of it.

For example, a hike in a National Park may include listening to a book about climate change - especially at Glacier N.P., which in the not too distant future will need to be named the park formally known as Glacier N.P..

Sporting hall of fames.  Museums.  Concerts.  Athletic events.  Water parks in the Wisconsin Dells.  National Parks.  Train rides.  A night at a rodeo.  Music and dinner entertainment like the Hoop-Dee-Do review at Fort Wilderness in Disney World. The hot air balloon festival in New Mexico.

Suffice to say, those are a small sampling of the experiences your child will experience as a candidate at the MAC.

Health and Wellbeing

The health and wellbeing of our candidates starts before you even apply. These programs are intensely challenging, whether it is the intensity of the academics or the stresses of travel.

Students must have health insurance, and travel health coverage.

Students will not be admitted that do not have a therapist, and scheduled tele-health appointments monthly for the duration of their candidacy.

Students will be monitored daily due to the close involvement of the faculty.

On-call psychologists will provide consult in times of emergency.

Finally, we require candidates to have three personal supporters (e.g. two parents and a coach or friend) who are part of the candidate’s team, and available for communication and consult. The policy of FERPA (think HIPPA for academics) is unacceptable if not detrimental, which is the main reason for avoiding state and federal loans or grants. It is not an option at our school as I believe in the old adage “it takes a village…”.

Diversity and Inclusion

The goal of our institutional soul is to provide opportunities for diversity and inclusion not just by way of enrollment, but of course our travels. Our curricular and extra-curricular activities are structured to guarantee that our students will have interactions with as many sects of society as possible, both in the cohort and by way of our travels.

Keep in mind that while schools can enroll a diverse student body, it does not promise exposure, interaction, growth, and understanding.  The composition and continued intimate interactions of our cohort candidates ostensibly guarantees it.

While bidding and lottery enrollees may be less diverse, the selected paying candidates will be one way of enhancing diversity, choosing candidates not represented.

The other way of increasing our diversity is my intentional selection of scholarship candidates.  Here I will use my influence to attract from all marginalized or excluded peoples. I consider the following groups to be important to represent, for their historical subjugation and disregard – The Original Peoples, Blacks, Blue Collar, and Military, lead the way.
